Overview

Northwest Vietnam, with its rugged, cone-like mountains, deep valleys, and high vistas, is surrounded by some of the most extreme geographies in the country. Reaching the more remote areas of this region requires time and effort, but it is certainly worthwhile. Famous for its less-traveled paths through some of Vietnam’s most stunning and untouched landscapes, like Sapa, Northwest Vietnam offers riders a chance to witness natural wonders while testing their riding skills.To explore this incredible region, we have designed a 7-day Northwest Motorbike Tour from Hanoi to Vu Linh via Sapa, offering excellent service and Honda motorbikes ranging from 125 to 150cc. This tour takes you off the beaten path around the North Loop Trail to Sapa. Regardless of the route, you will traverse magnificent mountainous scenery, deep ravines, and spectacular passes.

Itinerary

We begin our first day with a ride from downtown Hanoi to Mai Chau. Start by taking Ton Duc Thang and Nguyen Trai Street towards Tran Phu/NH8 in Trung Van. Follow the Ho Chi Minh Trail/National Highway 21, then turn right onto Highway 12B. Next, take a left turn onto NH12B to reach Highway 6. Continue for 30.1 km and turn left onto QL15, followed by a right turn at the shop. Navigate the route from Vang Luong – Pha Ngan to reach Mai Chau.

Our first destination is a stunning valley nestled between towering cliffs, surrounded by rice paddy fields, lush green forests, and nature reserves. This unique terrain offers riders an exhilarating off-road loop trail and breathtaking scenery, including the Black River, limestone mountains, Ba Khan Lake, and Thung Khe Pass. Experience the culture of the Muong ethnic minority group and enjoy a warm welcome from the friendly locals. We end our first day of adventure with a long ride and an overnight stay at a homestay in Mai Chau.

After breakfast, we'll follow the route from Na Pho to Highway 15, leading to Highway 6 in Tong Dau. Then, we'll continue along Route 6 to Highway 14 in Phieng Luong. After crossing Highway 43, we'll reach Phu Yen. Today's journey might pose challenges for beginner bikers due to the rocky, slippery, and muddy single tracks. However, it offers a chance to reconnect with nature and immerse ourselves in the captivating charm of Phu Yen, situated at an altitude of over 1000 meters.

Phu Yen resembles a breathtaking artwork, with its towering mountains, lush green forests, and picturesque valleys. Looking down, vibrant rice fields and cornfields add to the scenic beauty. Explore the historic "General Vo Nguyen Giap" forest in Gia Phu Commune, a place marked by significant military history and named after the nation's esteemed hero. Here, amidst the tranquil surroundings, you can listen to the soothing sounds of streams, birds, insects, and the rustling of leaves in the wind.

As our second day draws to a close, we'll cherish the unforgettable moments spent in the enigmatic land of Phu Yen. Tonight, we'll rest at a hotel, reflecting on the day's adventures.

Today's journey covers the longest distance of our tour, so we'll set off early at 7 a.m., following the route: Than Uyen – Ql37 – QL32 – Ta Ya – QLL279. After enjoying breakfast accompanied by a cup of coffee, we'll tackle a genuine off-road single track (weather permitting). Given the extensive ride spanning over 200km, it's essential for our group to support one another to ensure we reach our destination in a timely manner.

In the afternoon, we'll venture into one of Vietnam's most breathtaking landscapes – Mu Cang Chai. Renowned as a must-visit destination in the Northern mountainous region, Mu Cang Chai is celebrated for its perilous roads, ancient scenery, and majestic mountain ranges, all complemented by the serene and picturesque sight of ethnic houses nestled amidst terraced fields.

By 4 p.m., we'll arrive in Than Uyen, where we'll visit the Khau Co site situated on the Khau Co Pass, a site sure to mesmerize you with its natural grandeur. Afterward, we'll return to the hotel to unwind and recharge after a day filled with unforgettable experiences.

Departing from Than Uyen, our journey continues towards the Binh Lu crossroads. Along the way, we'll have the opportunity to traverse one of the Northwest's four long, rugged, and majestic passes – O Quy Ho. This pass is a paradise for motorcyclists, offering a dreamy off-road track suitable for bikers of all skill levels. Today's highlight is the Silver Falls, cascading down the O Quy Ho Valley from a height of over 100m. Travelers can enjoy a picnic and even swim in the summer months.

After indulging in lunch in Sapa, we'll explore Muong Hoa, a romantic valley known for its unspoiled nature and the cultural richness of its indigenous people, which captivates numerous tourists. Another must-visit site in Sapa is Fansipan, the highest mountain in Southeast Asia, standing at 3,143m. Along the route to the peak, you'll encounter many rare plants and animals. To reach the summit, we'll take a cable car ride. Finally, we'll return to Sapa town for dinner and spend the night at a hotel.

We'll start our journey by heading northeast on Xuan Vien towards Ngu Chi Son. Upon reaching Dien Bien Phu Street/National Road 4D, we'll travel for 4km before turning onto National Highway 4A and Highway 70 towards Luc Yen. Along the way, we'll take a moment to explore Sau Chua Peak, offering panoramic views of the picturesque Lao Chai and Ta Van Valley in the enchanting land of Sa Pa.

Luc Yen is renowned not only for its gem mining but also for its vibrant Luc Yen Gem Market. With abundant deposits of gemstones, the area is known for creating stunning paintings and works of art using various types of stones. In addition to marveling at the beauty of gems, we'll immerse ourselves in the rich cultural traditions of the Tay people. Luc Yen is teeming with historical and cultural landmarks as well as scenic spots, making it a captivating destination for tourists. After our exploration, we'll return to the homestay for dinner and rest.

Today marks the shortest, most enjoyable, and relaxing leg of our tour. We'll embark on a brief yet delightful off-road journey from Luc Yen to Vu Linh. Following breakfast, we'll set off from QL70 and proceed along DT152 to road 170, reaching Vu Linh by noon for a satisfying lunch. Indulge in local delicacies such as rice fields, flower banana salad, fish salad, shrimp salad, and chicken cooked with sour bamboo shoots, among others.

After lunch, we'll venture to Thac Ba Lake, renowned as "Ha Long Bay on Land" and one of Vietnam's largest artificial lakes. The pristine blue waters of the lake reflect the surrounding ancient forests, creating a picturesque vista. We'll spend the night at a Tay house, offering panoramic views of Thac Ba Lake and the refreshing breeze.

For a smooth journey back to Hanoi, we'll opt for the less-traveled road 2B, bidding farewell to the serene countryside scenery. However, we won't miss the opportunity to soak in the tranquility and rustic charm of the majestic Red River. As the largest river in Vietnam, it originates in China's Yunnan Province and meanders 1,175 kilometers southeast through deep, narrow gorges before entering Vietnam and eventually flowing into the Gulf of Tonkin via a sprawling delta. Along its banks, you'll find quaint villages, ancient temples, and vast maize fields, all of which contribute to the river's significance as a life source. For Hanoians, it symbolizes Vietnamese history and the enduring prosperity of the capital city. By 4 p.m., we'll arrive back in Hanoi, marking the conclusion of our 7-day Motorbike Tour, brimming with emotion and excitement.
