Awaking to a breathtaking view from our homestay, the cool, misty breeze immediately envelops us. Tourists are encouraged to rise early to soak in the foggy ambiance of the mountainous region. Following a hearty breakfast in Phu Yen, we pack our belongings and gear up for Day 2 of our journey. The initial sights of Yen Bai’s Mu Cang Chai district greet us with mountain ranges, rolling hills, and expansive rice terraced fields.
Our 180km route took 4 hours to complete. Although the distance is considerable and the road conditions can be challenging, the ever-changing scenery makes the journey captivating. Along the way, tourists will encounter traditional Thai stilt houses, golden rice terraced fields in Muong Lo, picturesque flower valleys, winding roads, and steep hills. After lunch, we proceed to the mist-covered Qua Khau Pha Pass, feeling the elevation change as we ascend.
From the top, the view of the rice terraced fields amidst the mountain ranges and forests of northwest Vietnam is awe-inspiring. Witnessing this landscape, especially during the ripe rice season, reveals why it is considered a treasure and heritage of the region. The fields, resembling a “golden sea,” stretch across Mu Cang Chai’s mountain ranges. After a day filled with thrilling rides, unforgettable experiences, and stunning vistas, we return to the hotel. There, we enjoy a dinner featuring local specialties and engage in some entertaining games.

Early morning may be the most serene and peaceful time of our motorbike trip, as we enjoy the fresh air, wet mist, and watch the dawn break. On Day 3, we journey to Sapa. The route from Mu Cang Chai to Sapa spans about 140km and takes a little over 3 hours, thanks to the Noi Bai-Lao Cai highway. Instead of spending 6 to 7 hours on a bus or train, tourists can now drive to Sapa in just 3 hours.
Sapa offers a wealth of activities and sights. Visitors can explore ancient villages, admire stunning rice terraced fields, and meet the welcoming Mong people. For a true local experience, tourists can sample homemade wine, participate in traditional dance shows with local ethnic people, and learn about the musical instruments crafted by local artisans.

The cold temperature in Sapa ensures a restful night's sleep. As the sun rises, its warm rays mix with the chill. After breakfast, we set off for Luc Yen, located 175km from Sapa, a journey that takes about 4.5 hours. This remote district in Yen Bai province has several interesting attractions. Visitors shouldn't miss the bustling gem market in the district center, where locals sell various gemstone products, including ruby and sapphire, ranging from inexpensive to exquisite pieces.
Another must-see is Cam Duong Cave, one of Vietnam's top 10 caves. This cave remains untouched by human activities and features a variety of colorful, sparkling stalactites in different sizes and beautiful shapes. Whether you are a cave enthusiast or simply captivated by mysterious caverns, Cam Duong Cave is a fascinating destination.
